Student bridge project teaches important concepts in physics
Design and construction of balsa wood bridges at West High School has been a long standing tradition for physics students. Students put their understanding of static forces to the test as they construct bridges designed to maximize strength while minimizing the materials used in construction. Bridges are scored by finding the ratio of the load they support over and the weight of each bridge. Breaking the bridge is also part of students' learning lessons to see what their bridges can support. View a video to see a student bridge breaking.
